A Short
Story

A story of how the fictional town of Stillwaater Falls came to be the town of Cowboys vs. Zombies.

by Matt Arnold-Ladensack

“Cowboys vs Zombies: The Full Moon Stand at Stillwater Falls”

In the heart of the untamed frontier, nestled between the rugged crags of the mountains and the vast stretches of the western prairies, lay the quiet and aged town of Stillwater Falls. Once brimming with aspirations of growth and prosperity, it was a place where kindred souls sought solace from the challenges of the untamed wilderness.

However, beneath its picturesque exterior, a foreboding secret was whispered among its inhabitants - a shadowy curse that descended upon the town with each rising of the full moon.

Stillwater Falls had its origins as a settlement born from the frenzy of the Gold Rush era, built around a thriving gold mine that drew fortune-seekers from far and wide. The town's affluence seemed boundless, but as miners dug deeper into the earth, they unwittingly disturbed an ancient burial ground, stirring the restless spirits of the past.

As years rolled on, families settled in, hoping for a tranquil existence. But when the full moon cast its eerie glow, the graveyard on the outskirts of town would stir to life. A dark figure chanted over the graveyard and lights began to flash from the ground. Those who had been interred there rose from their eternal rest, condemned to roam as spectral zombies with hollow eyes and an insatiable appetite for the living.

The forest surrounding the town transformed into a realm of ominous shadows, its trees contorted and twisted as if tainted by the presence of the undead. From their branches hung the ghastly remnants of deceased souls, a grim reminder of the town's enigmatic curse. The bravest souls who ventured into the forest at night would catch faint whispers on the wind and feel a chill in the air as though ghostly fingers grazed their skin.

The heartbeat of Stillwater Falls resided in its timeworn saloon, a lively gathering spot where laughter once reverberated and tales were shared. However, with every full moon, the saloon's windows would rattle with the eerie howls of the undead, and the floorboards would creak under the weight of their stumbling steps.

On the outskirts of town stood a mysterious house, rumored to belong to a witch of old. Its windows were tightly boarded up, and an air of mystery surrounded its very existence. The townspeople spoke of a vengeful enchantress who had placed the curse upon Stillwater Falls as retribution for disturbing her sacred land. Whispers echoed of strange lights flickering in the house at night, and an aura of impending doom hung in the air.

Amidst the ongoing curse, as the bonds of unity strained and the fabric of community threatened to unravel, the indomitable spirit of the Old West persisted within the cowboys and cowgirls who called Stillwater Falls home. With the full moon's glow casting an eerie radiance, they gathered their courage, arming themselves with silver bullets and torches. They barricaded the streets, fortified the saloon, and set fire to the accursed forest, creating a barrier against the encroaching darkness. As the undead horde emerged from the graveyard, they were met with a steadfast final stand.

The battle raged through the night, a symphony of gunfire and flames clashing with the relentless advance of the undead. The mysterious house glowed with an otherworldly light, and the very ground seemed to tremble as the curse's grip weakened. At the peak of the conflict, a lone figure emerged from the shadows of the house - an elderly woman, bent with age yet exuding an aura of ancient power.

With a voice that carried across the battlefield, the old woman chanted an incantation that pierced the night air. Her words resonated with a commanding force, causing the undead to falter, their ethereal forms quivering. Slowly, they disintegrated into spectral fragments, vanishing into the night. The curse was broken.

The townspeople, weary yet triumphant, watched as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon. Stillwater Falls had weathered its darkest hour and emerged victorious, the curse lifted and the undead banished. As the sun's warmth spread across the town, a new chapter began for Stillwater Falls - a chapter of revival, unity, and a future unburdened by the haunting specter of the past.

The End.
